Fairmont State University is gearing up for an exciting homecoming weekend as the Falcons take on the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets Saturday, October 5, at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Kickoff is set for 2 PM, and all falcon fans are encouraged to come out and support in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.
This year, the Falcons are looking to break a two-game losing streak, having faced tough opponents in Bloomsburg and Glenville State. Last Thursday, the Falcons came up just short to Glenville State with a score of 17-14 and despite holding the Pioneers to just 288 yards of total offense, Fairmont State struggled with three turnovers and was penalized with 110 total yards, which ultimately had a significant impact.
Senior quarterback Will Adkins shared how the team is maintaining focus this week. “We understand that the most important thing is to keep moving forward and challenge ourselves and our teammates to be better every day,” he said. As a captain in what is his last homecoming
game, Adkins knows the significance of his role. “The position I’m in puts me in a leadership role that I don’t take lightly. The offense goes with me, and I have to make sure I’m playing my best while elevating the play of my guys around me. Those guys are the playmakers, and my job is to get them in their groove and let them go make plays.” His dedication to setting a good example will be important as the Falcons get ready to take on a tough opponent. The Falcons head into this matchup with a 1-2 record this season, looking to even the score against the Yellow Jackets. In 2023, Fairmont State pulled off a close win against West Virginia State, 21-20.
This Saturday will be their fifth meeting, with both teams having won two games so far, adding extra excitement to the rivalry. West Virginia State has a 2-1 record and just had a big win against West Virginia Wesleyan, beating them 52-14.
Their offense looked strong, with running back Steven Mitchell gaining 115 yards and scoring two touchdowns, while quarterback
Javon Davis completed 19 of 29 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets are hoping to keep that energy going as they come to Fairmont on Saturday.
To get ready for the game, Coach Barker has stressed how important it is to be disciplined and focused during practice this week. The Falcons’ defense, featuring standout Donovan O’Malley—who made 12 tackles last game—will need to perform strongly to contain the Yellow Jackets’ tough offense.
As Saturday’s homecoming game approaches, the Fairmont State community support will be important as the Falcons aim to turn their season around against the West Virginia State Yellow
Jackets. Kickoff is set for 2 PM at Duvall-Rosier Field, and fans are encouraged to wear their maroon and white and bring their school spirit to cheer on the team. Whether you’re a long-time supporter or new to the Falcon family, this game is a great chance to enjoy the excitement of homecoming and show your pride.
