On September 9th at Duvall-Rosier Field, Fairmont State University’s women’s soccer team
kicked off their 2024 season with a 1-1 draw against Shepherd University.
Braylyn Sparks scored a late goal to secure the tie.
Shepherd (0-0-2) dominated possession in the first half, but their attempts were hampered by
three offsides calls. Despite two yellow cards for Shepherd’s Sofia Carrera and Lydia Gable, the
score remained 0-0 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Serenity Thomas had a close chance but missed. Both teams faced
yellow cards, with Ashley Rainho and Thomas getting cautioned for Fairmont State.
In the 70th minute, Shepherd’s Taylor Schuck scored, putting the Rams ahead. Fairmont State
(0-0-1) responded with pressure; Tatiana Mayumi’s shot was deflected, and Ashleigh Weaver’s
attempt went wide. Olivia Johnston made a key save in the 78th minute to keep the Falcons in
the game.
In the 86th minute, Braylyn Sparks scored a fantastic goal to level the match. Sam Yuen almost
gave Fairmont State the lead soon after, but her chip shot went just wide. Sparks had another
chance but couldn’t finish, ending the game 1-1. Johnston had four saves for Fairmont State.
The team will next play at Salem University on Sunday, September 22, at 1 p.m
