Poky Dot: Renovated and Open for Business
On Friday, August 30th, 2019 at 5 a.m. an electrical fire started in the back banquet room of the Poky Dot, where the establishment was being remodeled. This closed the historic establishment after being open for 65 years.
“[The] first unit reported a working fire, flames coming from the rear of the building and we initiated an aggressive interior attack,” Fairmont Fire Chief Ed Simmons told WAJR Radio.
According to reports, there was nothing to indicate that the blaze was suspicious in nature. The WDTV News Station reported that after being closed for nearly two years, the well-known diner, Poky Dot, is ready to welcome back customers.
“I’m glad to see a local business pulling out of the literal ashes especially during the middle of the pandemic. Hopefully, they stay around,” said Logan Davis, a student at Fairmont State.
Alyssa Caputo, the Operator of Poky Dot, posted frequently on the restaurant’s Facebook page, updating the community on progress being made with renovations by posting pictures and telling people what’s new.
“The Poky Dot is such an iconic staple of the city of Fairmont. When it caught fire, the whole city felt a loss, but it’s so great to have that classic portion of Fairmont back!” said Macy Buck, a student at Fairmont State.
After being open for curbside only for about a week while the modeling inside was being finished with new booths and decorations they are now open for dine–in eating.
“Poky Dot is a nice family place to go, sit down, and eat. They have food for all ages whether you’re going for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just going to enjoy one of their very large ice cream sundaes for dessert, you won’t regret stopping by!” said Bobbi Uphold, Resident of Fairmont, WV.
Poky dot offers a modern twist to an old, well-known favorite of the area. They are best known for their towering ice creams, ice cream sundaes, milkshakes, and large pie slices. It’s all back! From their juicy burgers to the falling over banana split to the healthy salads everyone loves.
“I’m glad they’re back, I’ve always loved the interior design and food,” said Hunter Haslacker.
