Macy Buck, Biologist by Day, Artist by Night
Macy Buck is a 19-year Sophomore here at Fairmont State University. Macy is a Biology major with a not-so-secret love of art. She has loved art since she was about eight years old. It became her dream job throughout high school until she found her love for Biology.
Macy originally applied to Fairmont State University for the Visual Arts department, but ultimately fell in love with Biology through her dual credit courses. Macy told me that she chose Fairmont State exclusively because of their astounding art departments, both their Visual and Performing Arts.
“I’ve always enjoyed the experiences I’ve had in the art department at Fairmont State. I had a design class with Joel Dugan, which was an amazing class and a great experience/opportunity to grow as an artist.”
Macy has been involved in art more professionally for about 5 years now. She told me that she always had a passion for art of all forms. Macy said that over the last five years, she’s had an influx in commissions. She took Advanced Placement (AP) Graphic Design and Advanced Placement (AP) Drawing in high school and fell in love even more.
“My art is an expression of myself, who I am, and what I’m feeling. I pour my heart and soul into every brushstroke and have a true passion for it.”
Macy’s main style of art is realism with varying quirks. She often tries to test new and different styles, while keeping realism in mind. These changes include funky, neon colors, slightly warped proportions, and the use of different textures.
Her favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh. She told me that she loves how you can; see his journey from realism to his iconic short-stroke painting style chronologically. His tragic and mysterious death has always seemed to captivate her, as it was never solved. Macy’s favorite realm of art is painting, specifically acrylic paint, because of its quick-drying properties that train you to work quickly and efficiently.
“Through working with acrylic paints, I feel as though I’ve grown as an artist with capturing form and colors in a more creative way.”
