School of Nursing Receives Grant for Pediatric Patient Simulator

The School of Nursing received $100,000 from grants and private funding in early January to assist the school in purchasing an advanced pediatric patient simulator.

The $100,000 was supplied by The Maier Foundation, Inc, ($50,000) the Carl Del Signore Foundation ($25,000) and the remainder from an anonymous funder.

The grants and funding were made through the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization that solicits and administers private donations on behalf of the Fairmont State University.

“Our current pediatric simulator is over nine years old and provides limited learning opportunities for our students,” said Laura Clayton, associate dean of the School of Nursing. “At the time of its purchase, it was considered state of the art; however, simulation manikins have progressed in the last couple of years.”

The new patient simulator will be available for students by late spring 2020.

President Martin said, “Fairmont State prides itself on the depth of experiential learning opportunities we offer. The hands-on experience our nursing students will get by virtue of this generous gift will not only make them stronger, more well-prepared health care professionals, but it will also help set them apart from other job candidates upon graduation.”

Fairmont State’s School of Nursing is ever advancing its program to better prepare the health care professionals of the future. It was recently ranked the No. 1 nursing school in the state by Careers.org.
