Fairmont State University is marking Autism Awareness Month (U.S.) with blue lights on campus throughout April. According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that impacts brain development involving social interaction and communication skills. It is most often diagnosed before the age of 3 and occurs four times more often in boys than in girls. It is a spectrum disorder, meaning that the severity of the disability falls along a range, with some people more severely affected than others.

Advocates of Autism Awareness Month hope to bring more awareness and acceptance of people with autism. People are encouraged to wear blue on April 2nd, World Autism Day, or to hang blue lights throughout April to show support for people affected by autism and to participate in local special events. The Corridor Chapter of the Autism Society -West Virginia will be holding their 7^th Annual Walk for Autism in Nutter Fort, starting at 10:00 a.m. on April 27th. The walk is free and everyone is encouraged to attend.
