Summer in Fairmont

With the completion of the semester finally upon us a new season is prospering in Fairmont. While most students will elect to go home for the summer it is important to remember that Fairmont has lots to offer while on your summer vacation if you choose to stick around.

As the weather starts clearing up residents will more than likely head to bodies of water like Cheat Lake, Arden or Blue Hole but it’s important to remember there is more to West Virginia than its beautiful scenery and bodies of water.

The completion of the Middletown Commons is finally near and will act as a drive-through style promenade shopping experience. Residents can expect some of their favorite local stores as well as a mix of franchises. In the future, construction will resume to build a numerous story hotel and a six-screen cinema.

Another location for some good, clean family fun is the Coal Country min-golf course. The course is located off Interstate-79 in Fairmont. Their facility includes an 18-hole golf course, batting cages and a mining museum. The rates are extremely low, and it’s located on great scenery

On a change of speeds, Fairmont’s Sweet Memories Antique Mall offers a day of interesting fun revolving around artifacts and old antiques of course. They harbor a wide collection of antique primitives, an extensive military collection, advertising, glassware and much more. The shop is located on Dunbar St. in Fairmont.

On a related note, the Telephone Museum in Fairmont offers a plentiful collection of antique telephones and telegraph technology. This museum is just off the beaten path of downtown Fairmont and well worth a visit. It is full of telephone history and fun to look at. People from older generations will enjoy the step back in time and the younger generations will be amazed at how people used to communicate! The hours vary, so check for days and times it is open.

Fairmont is more than home to the university we all know and love. If you do decide to stay in the area for summer break, make sure to check out these locations and support your local community!
